Nervous about your first session? Here’s what happens, from the free call to the end of hour one.

Before: the Let’s Talk call

At Bethesda, most people start with a free 15-minute video call. You meet your therapist, share a little about what’s going on and ask questions. There’s no commitment.

The first session

Your first full session is about getting to know you. Your therapist will:

  • Explain confidentiality and its limits
  • Ask what brought you in, and what you’d like to be different
  • Ask about your health, sleep, relationships, work and supports
  • Ask about your safety, gently and directly
  • Talk with you about goals, and how often to meet

You set the pace

You don’t have to share everything at once. It’s okay to say “I’m not ready to talk about that yet.” A good therapist will respect that.

How to prepare

  • Jot down what you want help with, even in a few words
  • Note any questions about cost, coverage or scheduling
  • For a collision, have your claim number and insurer details ready
  • Find a private, quiet place for a video session

After

It’s normal to feel tired, relieved or a little raw after a first session. Many people feel lighter just for having said things out loud. If the fit doesn’t feel right, you can switch therapists. That’s part of the process.

Questions

Quick answers.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on what brings you in. Your therapist will talk with you about a plan and review progress with you as you go.

Is what I say confidential?

Yes, with a few limits required by law, such as a serious risk to you or someone else, or a child’s safety. Your therapist explains them in the first session.
