For many people and many concerns, yes. What the research says, who online therapy suits, and how to get the most from a video session.
What the research says
Large reviews of the research have found that therapy by video produces results largely equivalent to therapy in person. One review pooled 57 studies and found the two largely matched. Another found the strongest results when CBT was used for anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress.
Why it works for so many people
- It fits your life. No commute, no waiting room, and evening times that work around jobs and families.
- Comfort. Many people open up more easily from a familiar space.
- Access. You can see a therapist who fits, wherever you live in Canada.
- Continuity. Travel, weather, illness or a move don’t have to interrupt your care.
- After a collision, you don’t need to drive or ride anywhere to get help with driving anxiety.
When in person might be better
Online therapy isn’t the best fit for everyone. In-person care may suit you better if you’re in crisis or need more intensive support, if you don’t have a private space to talk, or if technology itself is a big barrier. A good practice will talk this through with you honestly.
Getting the most from a video session
- Find a private spot where you won’t be overheard. Headphones help.
- Use a laptop or tablet if you can, set on something steady, and check your connection beforehand.
- Have water, tissues and a notebook nearby.
- Turn off notifications so you can focus.
- Give yourself a few minutes after the session before jumping back into your day.
